Dust off my old python install and make sure I've got the compilers and debuggers ready. I think it's around 500-1k to get a personal version of Matlab with all the necessary toolboxes - which isn't cheap but might be worth it in the long run. Not as widely used so might be more difficult to get help.It seems my next steps are to 1st give python a try and then maybe if I'm not happy I'll shell out the money for Matlab. ML / AI capabilities although probably require more toolboxes.Cons: May start to get pretty expensive. Great easy to use plotting and math capabilities. Honestly for me it comes down to having a platform that already has most of the functionality built in. I have dabbled with Java and Python using the IB API. See if I'm happy with python as a solution for me or if I should try Matlab.I am considering the same.
If you have a lot of time on your hands then that might not be bad, but for me I don't think I will ever get anything done if I have to do everything from scratch. I could add the deep learning and parallel toolboxes for another $90 but I don't see the need at this point.IMO, python and other "free" languages will still require a substantial amount of development time, maybe more so than using something like Matlab. This isn't bad in my opinion. This is all for around $330. I am considering the 2021 release with the stats toolbox, optimization, econometrics/time-series, and financial toolbox. I think they dropped it in the current release but there is now a community replacement (available on Github) called IB4m.
